The Huge One Suggests

In his blog on Mlive, Huge suggests:

• The Detroit Tigers will fire manager Jim Leyland by the All-Star break because no arms in the bullpen will force Dave Dombrowski's hand. The Tigers will finish 15 games out of first place. Kirk Gibson will be hired as skipper.

Brandon Inge's buddy, "Two Swings" back in town as skipper? I have always said that Gibby reminds me of Billy Martin. Martin was intense and had the ability to inject himself into teams quickly. But he was a short term, quick fix. I would liken Gibson to Martin in that aspect. Perhaps Gibby would prove me wrong, but I bet his intensity would get old quickly. He might be able to save the '09 season, though. We'll see.

I Like the Moves

After last off–season's decision to offend, I mean become offensive, er ... um, well ...

It was about a year ago that the Tigers acquired Miggy and mortgaged part of their future. Hey, who wouldn't make the trade? Heck, the Tigers didn't get anything from Cabrera in April or May and barely June, but he ended up leading the American League in home runs. Anyhow, we all know that trading for the short stop formerly known as Edgar Renteria was a mistake.

I sure do like it more when the Tigers get on the defensive. Defending their last place finish is going to be easy; if they want to impress, they must boot the ball less. Edgar didn't get to many balls at short; Carlos Guillen may not be the answer there, either, but Adam Everett could be a steal at a million dollars. He could platoon with that kid that DD (Dave Dombrowski) thinks is a PTP (part time player) and have a good year. We shall see.

Gerald Laird, new catcher, is an interesting find. He may well be a newer version of Mike Heath. Funny, former Tiger catcher and future Hall of Famer Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez still is unsigned and may have to become a bargain for someone.

Well, I like the moves on the surface. Fielding and pitching are how you build a championship team. Didn't the Tigers learn anything from the Yankees?

Yea, Yea, I know

I guess I took that rumor too far ....

Jack Wilson is not a Tiger yet.

Plus, the Pirates are asking for a bounty for a year or so of defense.

I don't think Larish or Joyce would be good choices in a such a trade ...

Jack Wilson Is a Tiger

The Pirates sent Jack Wilson to the Tigers. The players involved in the deal are, thus far, undisclosed. Stay tuned for more.

Alan Trammell and Jack Morris

Sure, Alan Trammell and Jack Morris have been denied by the Hall of Fame for several years. Both of them probably deserve serious consideration for the HOF. I suppose even Lou Whitaker deserves a thought or two.

Trammell, an incredible short shop and pretty good hitter, played whatever role Sparky Anderson had for him. A professional through and through, Tram played in a time when Cal Ripken set a new standard for short stops. And, when Tram became eligible, the country was focused on the Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciaparra new–age short stop statistic probe.

Morris, the winningest pitcher of the 1980s, never received the credit he deserved. Sure, he was jerk and made few friends in the media, but that is no reason to keep his just rewards away from him. I remember hearing stories about how he and Lance Parrish would brawl once in a while.

One thing about Morris that I always found interesting was how he pitched "to the game." If the Tigers had a sizable lead, Morris relaxed. The dude pitched complete games and was a great competitor.

It's a toss up, but I sure would like to see some 1980s Tigers in the Hall of Fame. If my memory serves correctly, the Tigers were the winningest team of the '80s, even with their terrible 1989.

Jack Wilson

I guess, if you're the Tigers brass, you wish you would have dealt for Jack Wilson back in 2007 when the rumors were hot. Wilson is a good field/okay hit short stop. But the Tigers could have had him for only Jair Jurgens, if I remember correctly. They ended up giving up two players to (stupidly) acquire Edgar Renteria. The outfield prospect they gave up Gorkys Hernandez.

When they made that October 29 trade, we all thought they were smart!

Think again!

"We are excited to add an all-star caliber shortstop in Edgar Renteria to the Tigers organization," Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. "Edgar is a quality player, proven winner and tremendous leader that solidifies our infield."

A second–round pick is no Jair Jurgens but at least we're not stuck with Edgar any longer

• According to MLB Trade Rumors (written by Tim Dierkes) the Giants allegedly signed shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year, $18MM contract. Information will update with more details and confirmation as it becomes available.

• If the report is accurate, the Tigers tentatively get the Giants' second–round pick without worrying about whether to offer Renteria arbitration.

• Of course, Renteria, 33, hit .270 in 547 plate appearances for the Tigers. Defensively, he made nine fewer plays than the average shortstop.

• You have to wonder, will a move back to the senior circuit revitalize him?
